Week 2 is coming to a close

Pasta is clearly the staple of the office cafeteria.  There are sometimes five (yes five!) different pasta's available.  Today I realized that part of my afternoon sluggishness is very likely more attributable to a pasta lunch than to continued jetlag.

I looked at two apartments this week.  One, very nicely designed, with a fireplace, a Murphy bed, and in a good, quiet neighborhood.  (And the landlord was a very nice fellow who is retired from one of the other agencies and who gave me a lift to the apartment.) Alas - no windows - it is a basement apartment.

In visiting the other apartment on Thursday, I tried a surface bus - the 716 - and it took an hour (and 42 stops)  to get to the destination.  This apartment is very small, a little funky (the water heater is problematic, the hot plate is problematic, the parquet floor is buckling....) decorated dully and with insensitivity to color and space - and located in one of the best spots in the city.

During the metro ride back afterward (so the commute time to the office via the metro could be determined) I considered my options - and realized I do not like to make a choice that is really a choice.  I have to chose an unknown outcome based on a few factors in an environment where I have no experience.  It feels unfair.

As I have less than four months left in this city, and want to maximize my opportunities to enjoy it, I chose the tiny, funky place next door to the Roman Forum.

So today was my last walk from the hotel to the office.  This is the shortcut I found a few days ago.

The office has a very comfortable solution to open work space /privacy and maximizing light. Each office (some have one, some two and some even four people in an office) has glass walls to the common space and a partial glass wall with the next office. The glass is nearly opaque along bands that offer a little privacy, and yet allow you to see in without too much disturbance.

Now to pack.  I move into an apartment in the morning.
